Ashland University Faculty Trombonist Featured In Two Upcoming Concerts

3/21/13 ASHLAND, Ohio - Ashland University's Dr. Scott Garlock, associate professor of music, director of jazz studies and instructor of the low brass studio, will present two concerts which showcase his musicianship on the trombone.

On Monday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m., he will perform with the newly formed ensemble Cleveland Trombone Collective in a guest artist recital. He will then present a faculty recital on Wednesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. Both performances are held in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall, and are free and open to the public.

The Cleveland Trombone Collective is an ensemble of six to 14 trombonists who gather at least once a month. The performers include members of the Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Firelands Symphony Orchestra, Mansfield Symphony, Opera Cleveland, The Blossom Festival Band, Olympic Brass Quintet, Heritage Brass Quintet, the Dave Banks Big Band, Ernie Krivda's Fat Tuesday Big Band, Tommy Dorsey Big Band, Guy Lombardo Orchestra and many others.

For Monday's guest artist recital at Ashland University, performers will include Dr. Garlock, George Carr, Pete Cumming, Paul Hungerford, Eric Rowles and JC Sherman. The concert program will include classical pieces from Tchaikovksy, Mozart, Schumann and Ravel to more contemporary selections from Hoagy Charmichael and Simon and Garfunkel.

For Dr. Garlock's faculty recital on Wednesday evening, he will be assisted by pianists Emily Garlock and Rock Wehrmann, percussionists Mell Csicsila and Aaron Hill, bassist Tim Powell, and Thomas Reed on clarinet and saxophone. The program begins with Robert Sibbing's “Homage to Anaîs Nin” followed by Garlock's arrangement of Domenico Dragonetti's “Andante and Rondo” for Kontra Bass, then Thomas Zugger's “Three Dances” including movements of Jazz Waltz, Slow Dance and Irish Jig. After a brief intermission, the program continues with “Illuminations for Vibraphone and Bass Trombone” by Richard Coolidge; and closes with the jazz standards Burke/Van Heusen's “It Could Happen to You,” Miles Davis' “Donna Lee” and Heyman/Green's “Body and Soul.”

As a performer, Dr. Garlock (a Jupiter Wind artist) has been featured with Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Diane Schuur, Carl Fontana, Paquito dRivera, Louie Bellson and others in addition to recording over 100 commercials and albums, including the Surprise of Being with Joe Lovano. He also performed in the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, the Quad City Symphony, the Peoria Symphony, the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, Firelands Symphony Orchestra and is a member of The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, The Cleveland Pops Orchestra and Mansfield Symphony Orchestra.
