Ashland University College of Arts and Sciences to Host Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium

Ashland University’s College of Arts and Sciences is hosting an Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium that will feature the works of more than 65 students from 14 departments in the College.

According to Dr. Andrew Greene, assistant professor of biology/toxicology, the March 30 symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Myers Convocation Center. The symposium will feature oral presentations, performances, poster presentations and art exhibitions.

Ashland University, Mansfield City Schools Join in Math Turnaround Project

Ashland University and Mansfield City Schools have agreed to collaborate on a school turnaround project – focusing on middle school math instruction -- that could become the model for change in schools facing rigorous challenges in Ohio.

“Ashland University was awarded a $33,000 grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation to develop a School Turnaround Program for Low Academically Performing Schools, and the Mansfield City School District has been selected as a case site for the program,” said Ashland University President Dr. Fred Finks.

Ashland University Faculty and Students Help Create Learning Centers

Four Ashland University students majoring in Child and Family Studies and 13 students majoring in Early Childhood Education helped create and run learning centers for a School Readiness Initiative titled "Talk, Read, Play...Together!"
The event, which was attended by 41 parents and their children, was held at the Kroc Center in Ashland and sponsored by the Family and Children First Council of Ashland County and United Way of Ashland County. The learning centers were for parents and their children ages infants through age 4.

Ashland University Chemistry Professor Study Confirms Inexpensive Jewelry Can Release High Levels of Dangerous Cadmium When Children Mouth or Swallow Items

Young children who mouth or swallow jewelry containing cadmium may be exposed to as much as 100 times the recommended maximum exposure limit for the toxic metal, according to research published online March 4 ahead of print in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP).

The study, conducted by Dr. Jeffrey Weidenhamer, professor of chemistry at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, measured bioavailability, or how much cadmium leached out of the jewelry. The research also found that damaged pieces of jewelry in some cases leached up to 30 times more cadmium than undamaged pieces.

Ashland University Student Senate President Meets President at Forum

For Ashland University Student Senate President Phillip Wages, it was “a day I will always remember.”

Wages, a senior toxicology major from Blanchester, Ohio, was invited to attend President Barack Obama’s small business forum at Cleveland State University on Feb. 22 and was part of a group of 15 college student leaders scheduled to meet with Kalpen Modi, the youth liaison for President Obama. This meeting took take place following President Obama’s opening remarks at the small business forum.

Fitness Day at Rec

Ashland University students, faculty and staff participated in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) National Fitness Day held on campus Tuesday at the 110,000-square-foot Recreation Center.

During the afternoon, informational tables and booths were provided by various organizations from the Ashland University community. These groups provided educational information and some hands-on learning in areas such as fitness assessment, healthy eating, tobacco awareness and more.

Ashland University Alumnus in Middle of Egyptian Revolution

Ahmed Ebraheem, a 2008 graduate of Ashland University, has been in the midst of the Egyptian revolution and has sent emails to Ashland University faculty and staff members petitioning their help.

Ebraheem graduated from Ashland University with a degree in journalism and a minor in electronic media production. After going back to his home country of Egypt, he has worked as a journalist for a Cairo-based daily newspaper and has established a small private video production company that has produced several corporate videos and documentaries for Al Jazeera and BBC Arabia.
