Current Event Topics:
Senator Obama and Reverend Wright

“Now that Reverend Wright has spoken thrice at length, and answered questions at length, we have learned much about what he thinks and how he thinks. There was nothing American, or post racial, or post ideological, about anything he has said. He has opened the door through which the super delegates--never mind voters in Indiana--can walk arguing that Obama is not electable. Obama, seeing the danger that this poses to his identity, has moved quickly to denounce both Wright and his words altogether. It remains to be seen whether his statement will be convincing enough to save his candidacy. If not, he will not become the Democratic nominee for president," states Dr. Peter Schramm, Executive Director of the Ashbrook Center. Dr. Schramm can be contacted at 419.289.5431 or at bkunkel@ashland.edu.
The Demise of Bear, Stearns

"Yes, they (the Federal Reserve Bank and the U.S. Treasury) rescued Bear, Stearns and maintained the operation of the global financial markets, but have they addressed the problem that caused the demise of Bear in the first place? While they should be congratulated, they should also be questioned as to why it happened so that measures can be put into place that insures that something like this does not happen again. Just think of the 7,000 employees of Bear who will be let go by Morgan. Just think of the employees who had Bear, Stearns stock in their 401(k) and saw the price of a common share drop from $165 to $2 in one year. It reminds us of Enron and WorldCom. We know where the responsibility lay there. I wonder if we will find it in the death of Bear, Stearns," declares Dr. Tom Harvey, finance professor.
Dr. Harvey can be contacted via tharvey@ashland.edu regarding this topic and topics concerning other aspects of the economy including the Federal Reserve interest rate cuts, the proposed tax rebate and the stock market.
