Electronic Reserve Policy in Brief

 

ABOUT ELECTRONIC RESERVES (ERESERVES)

Ashland University Library guidelines for Ereserves are based on the principle that the fair use provisions of 17 USCS section 107 permit the making of copies of copyrighted material for classroom use as long as the four determining fair use factors are considered.

Access to Ereserves is restricted by password.

 

ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS FOR ERESERVES

• Instructor-owned materials (course syllabi, lecture notes, sample exams, etc.).
• Public domain materials.
• Up to but not exceeding 20% of an entire book.
• Only one article from a single issue of a given periodical. (Additional articles from the same issue are allowed only if the Library has a license to display more.)
• Audiovisual materials for which the faculty member provides proof of copyright holder’s permission to use.
• Student work with signed permission form on file.
• PowerPoint presentations. (Library assumes faculty member has permission to post all copyrighted materials contained in PowerPoint presentations.)
• Websites. (Web-based resources or their contents may be copyright protected. In these instances fair use guidelines may apply.)

  

PLACING MATERIALS ON ELECTRONIC RESERVE

Complete an Electronic Reserves Submission Form for each individual item. Submit a clean, readable copy of materials to Judi Humphrey (x5400) at least five working days before students are to use the materials.

Remember: The copy your students read online will be only as readable as the copy you submit.

 

ALTERNATIVES TO ERESERVES

Librarians are available to help you select appropriate electronic reserve materials that a) meet fair use requirements and b) do not require copyright holder permission.

Physical materials (books, journals, CDs, DVDs) may be placed on "paper reserve."
