BSN Degree Requirements

Since the nursing program requires over 60 hours of nursing and related courses, students satisfy the requirements for a comprehensive major and therefore do not need a minor.

* These nursing courses include a clinical component.

*NUR 414: Each student will need to be available for approximately 40 hours of clinical experience for 6 hours of credit.  If a student registers for 8 credit hours, an additional project with field work will be required.  Since public health will be the focus of study, the clinical experience for the most part, will involve weekday, daytime hours.

If NUR 414 is taken for 6 hours, then 2 hours of NUR 320 or NUR 321 is required.  If NUR 414 is taken for 8 hours, NUR 320 or NUR 321 may may taken for elective credit.  See course descriptions for NUR 320 and NUR 321 below.

*NUR 405: Each student will need to be available for 45 hours of clinical experience during the semester. Since management functions will be studied, the clinical experience, for the most part, will involve weekday, daytime hours.

Nursing Courses and Descriptions

302 NURSING PROCESS: THEORETICAL BASES 4
The course identifies factors influencing the RN students acculturation into baccalaureate nursing as presented at Ashland University. Students are assisted to integrate their existing roles, philosophies and expectations with those of the nursing program. The focus for study is selected middle-range and practice level theories that support the nursing process. The nursing process serves as the mechanism for implementation of theory and research-based nursing interventions. Curriculum concepts emphasized are communication, critical thinking, therapeutic nursing interventions, and values/valuing.

303 NURSING PROCESS: INDIVIDUAL HEALTH 4
The course focuses on the nursing process as a tool to facilitate nursing practice with individual clients. The course is designed to enhance the RNs students assessment and diagnostic skills to facilitate developmentofcomprehensive health care plans. Health strengths and needs are determined through analysis and synthesis of assessment data. Planning nursing care and implementing teaching for the purpose of health care promotion is emphasized.

307 TOPICS IN NURSING 1 - 3

A study of a specific aspect of nursing reflecting the changing focus of nursing practice.  Topics will include such areas of nursing as computers in nursing, etc.  May be repeated as topics change.

308 HEALTH PROMOTION FOR THE ELDERLY 3
This course is designed to assist students to develop increased knowledge about issues affecting health care of elderly. Community resources and health promotion strategies for aging populations will be explored. Attitudes toward aging will also be examined. Nursing/Social Work credit.

309 NURSING PROCESS: INTERNATIONAL TRANSCULTURAL PERSPECTIVES 3
The focus of this course is to gain an international perspective of health care issues. Through small group work, students will compare health related values, beliefs, and practices in selected countries outside the United States with health related values, beliefs, and practices within the United States. Incorporating this knowledge, students will then develop appropriate professional interventions for a specific sub-cultural group.

320 EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR NURSES  2 - 4

The course provides an overview of educational strategies for nurses.  The focus for study is specific roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse to educate patients, peers and the community.  Curriculum concepts emphasized are adult learning theory, learner needs, teaching methods, styles of learning, professional responsibility, program and learner evaluation, and supportive and active learning environments.

321 OVERVIEW OF DISASTER RESPONSE NURSING 2 - 3

The course provides an overview of the latest concepts in disaster response.  The focus for study is specific roles and responsibilities of the civilian RN in response to natural and intentional disasters.  Curriculum concepts emphasized are types of disasters, disaster preparedness, disaster management, unique populations, and legal/ethical concerns.

360 NURSING RESEARCH 3
The course focuses on the contribution of research to professional practice. The student is assisted in the development of skills for critical appraisal of research reports to determine scientific merit and clinical relevance. The emphasis is on the application of established findings of research to practice. Each student will identify a researchable problem and complete a literature search. Roles of members of the research team will be explored.

414 NURSING PROCESS: COMMUNITY & PUBLIC HEALTH 6 - 8
Prerequisites: NUR 302, 303, 309, 360, MATH 208
Clinical/Didactic Ratio:  For the 6 credit hour option: 2.5 : 3.5
                                    For the 8 credit hour option: 4.5 : 3.5

This course applies the nursing process to families and aggregates in the community setting, with a strong focus on health promotion and disease prevention.  In addition, core public health functions and public health nursing practice will be addressed.  Students will have clinical experience throughout the semester.

405 NURSING PROCESS: HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS 5
Prerequisites: NUR 414, BUS 240, 318
Clinical/Didactic Ratio: 3:2
The course expands the utilization of the nursing process to health care delivery systems. The focus of the course is the professional nurses leadership and management role in working effectively within the various types of organizational systems. The various aspects of the role of the nurse as leader and manager are explored in depth with special emphasis on the role of nurse as change agent. The clinical component focuses on the application of relevant theory and research as a basis for critical thinking and decision making.

408 NURSING PROCESS: LEGAL, ETHICAL & POLITICAL PERSPECTIVES 3
Prerequisites: NUR 405 or concurrent
This course serves as the capstone of the nursing program by concentrating on the professional role of the nurse as change agent for the profession and society. Present and future nursing roles related to public policy formation are identified while exploring their ethical, legal and political dimensions. An integral part of the course is a field trip to the Ohio Board of Nursing to observe a Board meeting. Emphasis is placed on strategies to influence public policy decisions that will promote ethical health care delivery.

448 BIO-MEDICAL ISSUES FOR CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONALS 3
Prerequisites: EDEC 215 (waived for nursing students)
A study of biological, physiological and medical issues and conditions as they relate to the developing child from birth to age 8. The importance of understanding these issues in relation to the appropriate education and support of young children and their families is emphasized. Individual considerations that affect typical development or educational environment (e.g. attention problems, allergies, disabilities) are explored and appropriate techniques and resources for reducing the impact of these conditions on the child and learning potential are examined. EDUC/NUR credit.
