Each student has a print quota of 400 clicks for each term. Terms are from August to December, January to May, & May to August.
Clicks
A "click" system is one of the best ways to describe and manage the multiple ways to print document.
- 1 click = 1 page of single or double-sided black and white printing
- 2 clicks = 1 page of single-sided color printing
- 4 clicks = 1 page of double-sided color printing
What else do I need to know?
- In labs with duplex-capable printers, students will be able to decrease the charge to their quota by printing on both sides of the page. Duplexed pages will decrease their quota by 1 click instead of 2 clicks.
- Each student’s print quota is reset each term so there will be no carryover from one term to the next.
- Each time a student prints to a metered printer, see list below, a password box will appear. The student will need to enter their network/AD username and password. This is the same username and password that they use to login to the machine. Once authenticated, another dialog box will appear that states the number of clicks consumed by the print job, the amount of clicks their quota will be charged and their current quota balance. Their options will be to continue with the print job or cancel the job.
- If a student exhausts the quota, more clicks can be purchased at the following Ashland Bookstores: Columbus, College of Nursing/Mansfield, Ashland Main Campus, Ashland Seminary. Students will receive warning e-mails when they are close to exhausting their quota. Students cannot opt out of these automated emails.
- Student workers will be able to print to departmental printers without affecting their quota.
- If your department has a printer that you would like added to the metered list, please contact the Tech Support Center to have that printer configured.
- Miscellaneous and generic accounts will not be able to print to metered printers.
Quota Saving Tip: When a student prints a 5 page document that has color on 1 page, the student will get charges for all 5 pages being color (10 clicks). This is because the print system cannot see which pages of a document are color and which are black and white. We suggest that the student print the single color page separately and then print the rest of the document in black and white.
Color and Specialty Printing
Color printing is available at the Tech Support Center in Patterson Technology Center 100 during TSC operating hours. Please contact the TSC at 419.289.5405 for details.
For any specialty print job or jobs with large paper (over 8.5" x 11"), students should consult Print Services on the lower level of Amstutz Hall at 419.289.5755.
About the Program & Goals
In an effort to help the conservation of printing resources, the Office of Information Technology, with the support of the Ashland University Cabinet, instituted a print management system. The goals for this plan are:
- To raise awareness of the environmental impact of wasted paper and toner
- To reduce costs associated with wasted paper and toner
- To encourage Ashland University students to use electronic means for sharing and viewing documents
- To implement a print quota system for Ashland University students
