With several fine ensembles, dedicated faculty members who encourage and inspire excellence, and renowned guest artists, the department offers numerous performances annually with many free and open to the public.
Instrumental ensembles include Ashland’s premier instrumental organization the University Concert Band and the pride of Ashland University, The University Marching Band. The Ashland University Jazz Orchestra, one of the finest University Jazz bands in Ohio, performs many concerts throughout the year and produces the annual Maple Rock Jazz Festival featuring outstanding high school jazz ensembles and some of the finest professional jazz musicians in the country.
Recognized by WCLV FM in Cleveland as one of Ohio's finest Community Concert Bands, the Ashland Area Community Concert Band is well known in the area for its musical quality and contribution to the community. Outstanding wind and percussion players from the University and community perform with the Wind Ensemble while several other small ensembles include the woodwind quintet, jazz combo, brass ensemble, flute choir and percussion ensemble.
Vocal ensembles sponsored by the University are led by its principal choral ensemble the Ashland University Choir which performs regularly with Maestro Arie Lipsky and the Ashland Symphony Orchestra; while the select 16-member Chamber Singers are featured annually at the University’s Madrigal Feaste. Community members and University students combine their vocal talents in the Ashland Area Chorus mixed choir and the all female-voice Women’s Chorus performing at various events including the University’s Festival of Lights. Along with several guest, faculty and student recitals, the University hosts the Gretchen French Endowed Visiting Artist in Residence Series brings an internationally renowned musician to Ashland University each year for master classes, presentations, and concerts for the entire Ashland community.
