Selective Admission Statement & Requirements
Entrance into the Athletic Training Education Program in the Department of Sport Sciences at Ashland University is by selective admission. Students are permitted to apply for admission into the athletic training education program during the second semester of their freshman year or during their sophomore year. The formal application process must be completed by the second Monday of February. The formal application process requires that each student complete the following criteria:
I. Prerequisite Coursework:
Students must attain a C- or better grade in the following courses:
- HED 202 First Aid & Safety
- AT 165 Principles of Athletic Training
- AT 167 Basic Skills in Athletic Training
- BIO 125 Anatomy & Physiology I
- BIO 126 Anatomy & Physiology II
II. Completed Application:
Each student must submit a completed application which will include a brief essay on why they have selected athletic training as their intended profession. The application can be found on the Ashland University Athletic Training Web Site.
Applications are Due First Week in February, 2011 to the AT Program Director
III. Three Letters of Recommendation:
A professor/instructor at Ashland University must complete one letter. The professor should elaborate on your academic ability.
IV. Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.25
V. Interview with the Athletic Training Selection Committee.
VI. Completion of the Athletic Training Education Program Technical Standards Document
NOTE: After formal admission, students will be required to complete formal OHSA Blood Borne Pathogen training, which includes obtaining or declining the HBV vaccination. Students will also need to purchase liability insurance and pass a physical exam. Program standards require students to complete 600 hours of clinical assignments under the direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer.
