According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, nearly 62 percent of artists are self-employed. Those not self-employed often work in publishing, advertising, newspaper and magazine journalism and other specialized design fields. The career outlook for artists is better than average though competition for both freelance and salaried positions is expected to be strong. The overall employment forecast for artists and those in related fields is anticipated to increase by 16 percent through 2016.
