A creative writing degree is an asset in just about any career you pursue because it helps you fine-tune your skills of insightful thought and clear expression.
Our grads have opportunities in a wide variety of paths, such as reporting, editing, writing, public relations, journalism and more.
From learning about poetic forms and meters to understanding the finer points of style, the program helps you hone your skills to a sharpness that you’ll be proud to share with the world. One of the special strengths of the program is the advice you receive from professors and authors on how to navigate the often-challenging publishing world when your manuscript is complete.
|
Why You’ll Love the Creative Writing Program:
- You receive one-on-one attention from professors who are published authors.
- You get a well-rounded look at the entire publishing process.
- You have opportunities to have your works published in Passages, a journal of student creative writing.
- Your work will receive close attention. For example, your senior capstone manuscript is studied and discussed for one-to-two full weeks in class, during which you receive invaluable feedback.
- When you graduate you will have a fully developed manuscript, bound and placed in our library.
- You will have opportunities to meet with published authors who come to the English program as guest speakers. Recently, we have hosted such writers as Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn and Barbara Hurd.
- You and your work receive lots of artistic nurturing and coaching. That’s the value of keeping classes small.
- As a senior-level writing student you will take a capstone course, Editing One’s Own Writing, in which you work toward creating a polished series of stories or essays or a chapbook of poems.
