- Between 2010 and 2030, the population over age 65 will increase by 73%
- In 2000, the number of people age 65 and over was nearly 35 million
- By 2020, this number is expected to be 55 million
- By 2040, the number is estimated to grow to 80 million
- Growth in this segment is attributed to longer life expectancy and the aging of the “baby boom” generation
- The oldest old (age 85 and over) is one of the fastest growing segments of the population
