In this program, you will obtain a deep understanding of history and will acquire the skills you need to teach it in a classroom.

It takes a special teacher to bring Social Studies alive for teenagers, the kind you’ll be when you graduate with a major from Ashland University’s Integrated Social Studies Education program. This major combines instruction from both the History Department and the Education Department, and places you in the classroom for observation as early as your freshman year. Each year your time in the classroom grows, culminating in your 12-week student teaching experience. Our education program is nationally recognized as one of Ohio’s best for teacher preparation and our graduates can be found serving in nearly every school district in the state. When you graduate, you will be ready to guide students on the adventure of a lifetime, one that takes them into the rich tapestry that is our culture and past.

What You’ll Love About the Integrated Social Studies Education Major:

You’ll receive individual attention from your history and education professors who get to know you well in our small classroom environment that promotes interaction.
Your History classes are taught in a conversational, seminar style, not by lecture, so everyone gets involved.
Instead of studying History from a textbook, you’ll learn from original texts including the speeches of remarkable individuals such as Martin Luther King, Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln.
Every class is taught by a professor, not by a graduate student or teaching assistant.
You’ll have the opportunity to attend presentations by some of the foremost political minds of our day, brought to campus by the Ashbrook Center, an independent civic resource located on campus.
You’ll have an opportunity to join your classmates on an overseas trip exploring history, which takes place every other year. Recent excursions have included a visit to important European sites from World War II and a journey to the “England of Shakespeare and Churchill.”
Both your professors from the History Department and the Education Department coach and evaluate your classroom internship to provide you with the most useful feedback and guidance.

Reach Your Career Goals
When you graduate from the program, you will be ready to pass licensure tests to teach History and Social Studies to youth from grades 7 through 12. This year, the College of Education boasts a 96 percent pass rate on the state-mandated Praxis 2 exams and a 100 percent pass rate on state-mandated Praxis 3 exams. You will be prepared to teach when you graduate from Ashland University. Expand your career possibilities by also pursuing: Master of Education — Available during fall and spring evening classes and both day and evening classes throughout the summer at centers in Ashland, Columbus, Elyria, Massillon and Cleveland. Master of Educational Administration — Provides you with certification in an educational administration area of your choice. Doctor of Education — A terminal degree in the field of education. Master of American History and Government – Focus your history education in a specific area

Professors in the History Department employ a conversational seminar approach in class that keeps everyone engaged in discussions.
Professors closely mentor students on research projects and coach them through their student teaching experience.
The Ashland College of Education is recognized for outstanding preparation of classroom teachers.

Gain Real World Experience
Starting in your freshman year you will be involved in the classroom as an observer and assistant. This experience builds each year. Ultimately you will spend a total of at least 300 clock hours in the classroom prior to your student teaching experience. Your 300 clock hour student teaching experience gives you firsthand experience in leading a class of students. By the time you graduate you will be confident of your teaching abilities and competent at leading a class of history or social studies students.

Interesting Classes You May Take

American History After the Civil War — Examine how the fundamental American principles of freedom and equality have developed as the United States emerged as the world’s leading power from the Civil War to the present.
Modern Middle East — Trace the background of the various conflicts in the Middle East today, familiarizing yourself with the history of Middle Eastern countries, key leaders (past and present), and the current situation between various Arab, Christian and Jewish groups.
Secondary Methods — Undertake seminars and field experiences with students (grades 7-12) who have moderate to intensive educational needs. You will assess, teach and team with others in the educational community.
