This program prepares you to teach fitness and sport fundamentals to all grade levels, putting you on the front lines of fighting the obesity epidemic in today’s youth.
Students complete a full-time student teaching experience, and may choose from out-of-state and overseas field placements as well.

Our programs prepare you to take (and pass) the state teaching licensure exams upon graduation. You can pursue careers in physical education in the K-12 setting. You also have the option of a career in coaching.
The included element of an endorsement in adapted physical education gives you a competitive edge for jobs because you’ll bring these skills to your work:
- Planning and implementing adaptive programs
- Adjusting existing situations to meet students’ needs
- Finding ways for students to feel pride and a sense of accomplishment, where maybe the did not before
Some of our students go on to earn graduate degrees in exercise science, adapted physical education, sport education or educational administration. Our physical education majors have gone on to jobs with:
- Elementary, middle and high schools in Ashland, Medina, Lucas, Youngstown, Mansfield and Shelby — and even in other states thanks to our broad network for field experiences
- Coaching jobs at here at Ashland University and with Bowling Green State University (after further graduate study)

This physical education major includes many opportunities to observe or practice stills in the field with real students in real learning environments, including:
- Adapted P.E. at the Dale Roy School
- Micro teaching and mini lessons with peers in methods classes
- Observation and teaching at Ashland City Schools
- Fitness testing in Ashland City elementary schools
- Hosting special events of community agencies and school organizations
In particular, the full-time student teaching experience (over 12 weeks) is designed to help you transition from one side of the desk to the other through:
- Planning and classroom work with students
- Parental contact and partnerships
- Staff meetings and school-wide collaboration

Interesting Classes You May Take
- Motor Learning — Study contemporary motor learning theories and their use in teaching skill development.
- Coaching/Teaching — These sport-specific courses give you the skills necessary to teach or coach programs such as football, basketball, soccer and other sports.
- Tests and Measurements in Physical Education — Learn to use math and computer statistical procedures to test strength, physical fitness, motor ability and sport skills.
