Frequently Asked Questions: Student Housing Assignments
When will I receive my housing and roommate information?
Most students will receive their housing and roommate information via their AU e-mail sometime the week of June 16. If you have not received an e-mail, then a few things could have happened:
- You are not yet registered (we only house students who are registered); or
- You applied to housing very recently and we have not yet assigned you (when we do, you will receve your housing information).
Can I change my roommate/hall preference?
At this time, we can still take changes in roommate or hall preferences. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to accommodate any change. We will keep your preferences on file, though, and may be able to accommodate those at a later time.
Can I find a new roommate at a summer orientation?
Residence life staff will be available at various times to answer your questions, but assignments cannot be altered. Nearly all incoming freshmen will have been assigned at this time and shuffling these assignments at this time is not possible.
I just received my roommate/hall assignment. Can I change that?
Currently we are in a "room freeze." This is a practice utilized by many higher education institutions. The purpose of this freeze is to avoid confusion and disruption of students who have already received a confirmation letter of their assignment. Changes at this time would involve the displacement or movement of more than just two people. Room changes may be allowed early in the fall semester as open spaces and rooms develop and students learn more about Ashland and college life in general.
Why didn't I get my first choice of housing?
Each hall has a limited number of spaces available. Some of these halls fill quickly as demand far exceeds supply. Students are assigned by the date their contract was received with earlier dates' receiving preference over later dates.
I indicated a specific roommate on my housing contract but was not assigned with that person. Why?
Several things could have happened. The most likely reasons are as follows:
- Your intended roommate did not specify you on his or her housing contract (we only match mutual roommate requests);
- You indicated multiple roommates and we had no triples or quads available and so we had to split groups; or
- Your intended roommate was not fully accepted or fully registered when we made housing assignments (we cannot assign students to housing if they are not registered).
Why was I assigned to a hall with low preference or no preference at all?
We have returning and new students in each of our traditional halls. All returning students selected their room some time in the spring. As such, it is common to have some halls requested on a much more frequent basis than others. This requires us to assign these highly demanded halls first and then assign students to the less frequently requested halls. Because of this, students may be assigned to hall that they may not have requested.
Can I change my meal plan preference?
Yes. Please contact Marty Penwell, the Business Manager of Auxiliary Services, at (419) 289-5758. Note that after the third week of the term, your meal plan can only be increased. Also note that Ashland University requires ALL residential students not living in the Senior Apartments to participate in the meal plan in the Convocation Center.
Can I see my room? What are the dimensions? What does it look like?
Find your hall on the list of Residence Halls. From there, you will see panoramic pictures of the rooms, diagrams of the rooms, and approximate dimensions.
What should I discuss with my roommate before opening day?
Contacting your roommate(s) before moving in is very important. You should discuss what items for the room you will be bringing so that you don't bring two of something. For a list of approved and unapproved items, check the FAQ page. This is also a good opprotunity to begin learning the basics about your new roommate(s). What classes are they taking? What organizations do they want to join? Use these conversations to lead into discussing how you will share the room. Getting to know your roommate and discussing your room will help alleviate stress on opening day. If you need help dealing with an issue or figuring out a compromise, your RA can help mediate with you and your roommate(s).

I just contacted my assigned roommate and was told that he or she no longer plans on coming to Ashland. What should I do?
Please contact us. We will explore that and then work to find you another good roommate match.
