New Student Housing

Updated 7/1/2008

Off Campus Residency Policy

Ashland University is a residential University seeking to provide a learning environment supportive of its academic purpose and complementary to its academic program. The University, in order to attain that quality, has committed itself to provide campus housing for each of its students. All full time students (12 or more credit hours per semester) are, therefore, required to live in University housing unless other pressing reasons demand an exception to this policy. Exception will be made for the following reasons:

  1. Students 22 years of age prior to September 1 for the academic year.
  2. Commuter: Students who are living exclusively in the permanent and primary residence of legal guardians within thirty-five miles of Ashland University.
  3. Married, divorced, or widowed.
  4. Served in the Armed Forces and honorably discharged.
  5. Holders of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  6. Additional consideration by the Committee may be give to persons who have been convicted of a crime or served a prison sentence.
  7. Other: This criteria is for any student who has another reason to live off campus other than the above criteria.  Acceptable "Other" criteria includes, dependant child or children, the Study/Teaching Abroad program, Student Teaching or AU approved Internship closer to parents' permanent primary residency.  Financial savings is not an acceptable excuse.

Permission to live off campus is only valid as long as the reason for the exemption exists. The University reserves the right to revoke permission granted for off campus residency when the University deems it necessary or appropriate. Your local address and phone number must be maintained through the Office of Residence Life in order for off campus approval to remain valid.

Any student supplying false information on an application for off campus residency or failing to immediately notify the Office of Residence Life upon a change in exemption status, with intent to deceive, will be invoiced for the semesters or years room and board and subject themselves to possible judicial action. In addition, no refunds for room and board will be issued after the student has checked into the residence hall or the first day of class.

DEADLINES FOR APPLYING FOR OFF CAMPUS RESIDENCY ARE MARCH 1 FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR, EXCEPT FOR NEW INCOMING STUDENTS. ONCE YOU HAVE CHECKED INTO YOUR RESIDENCE HALL FOR THE YEAR, YOU MAY NOT APPLY FOR OFF-CAMPUS RESIDENCY.

Applications are available from the Office of Residence Life, 304 Founders Hall or online. If you have questions about the application or application process, contact the Office of Residence Life at (419) 289-5303. PART- TIME (11 hours or less) students need not apply to live off campus, unless they are currently living in a residence hall.

The Off-Campus Committee will hear appeals on an individual basis two weeks after the Committees initial meeting to review applications. Students will be granted one appeal. The student is responsible for contacting the Office of Residence Life for the time, date, and location of the appeal meeting.
