New Student Housing

Telecommunications Information

A phone line is provided to each resident room.  However, students must provide their own phone.  Phones must be touchtone and cannot have a redial button the same as the # button.  This hook-up allows on-campus dialing and voicemail service only.  To call off campus, you will need to use a personal billing number (PBN).  To receive a PBN, you will need to complete an application provided by the Telecommunications Office.  You will need to use the PBN for all off-campus calling, including local and operator-assisted calls.  A pay phone and lobby courtesy phone are located in most lobby areas.

The Telecommunications Office recommends that students not use cordless phones on campus.  The reasons behind this recommendation is a follows:

  1. Privacy cannot be guaranteed.  Depending on the type of cordless used, conversations can be heard over other cordless phones, television sets, radios, etc.
  2. If there are several cordless phones in close proximity, there is the risk of cross-communications.  This would result in a party line effect.
  3. Interference from cordless phone conversations infringes on the rights of other students and community residents to phone usage.

Please be aware that the use of extra long line cords may result in interference from local radio stations.  The telephone service has many telecommunication features (e.g., call waiting, call forwarding on campus, conference calling, voicemail, message waiting, etc.).  Accepting collect calls or making third party call is prohibited; service fees and judicial action will follow in the event of either.  Please refer to the telephone brochure for complete service and policy information.
