The Collection

The holdings of the Roger Darling Memorial Library at ATS include over 80,000 volumes and over 500 periodical publications. Other items held by ATS include microfiche, microfilm, videotapes, audiotapes, and a small collection of compact discs.

Classification System

The library is now changing over from the Union Seminary System to the Library of Congress System.  Both systems are based on the "letter" categories and appear somewhat similar.  During this transition, books with call numbers from the two different systems are being shelved in different locations.  Please see a librarian if you need assistance.

Catalog

The catalog is a joint computer catalog with Ashland University. All holdings in the Ashland University Library, The A. U. Media Center and Ashland Seminary Library are displayed. The holdings of the seminary library have "SEM" in front of the call number. Terminals are located on both sides of the library for catalog searches.

Check-Out Procedures

The ATS Library has an automated circulation system. All Seminary faculty, staff and students MUST have a photo identification card which is issued either at new student orientation or from Ashland University. Materials are charged out for 28 days and may be renewed twice unless there is a hold on the item. Items may be renewed by phone (419-289-5169), in person or on the library page of the AU Website (web renewal is possible as long as they are not overdue.) Periodicals, reference materials, dissertations, theses and projects must remain in the library so that they are available to all patrons. The fine for overdue items is 25 cents per day for the first 20 days and 50 cents a day beyond the first 20 days for seminary items and 50 cents per day for OhioLink items.  For seminary items, students have 7 days of grace to return overdue books. After that time, returned books are fined for all the overdue days.  The charge for items which are lost or never returned will be a minimum of $60.00 for seminary items plus a $5.00 processing fee and $115.00 for OhioLink items. Any student owing $25.00 or more in library charges will have his/her ATS library and OhioLink privileges suspended until the fine is cleared.

OhioLink fees for items returned 30 days or longer after the due date will be subject to a maximum overdue frine of $0.50 per day for 30 days ($15 cap). There is a $75 replacement fee, plus a $35 processing fee after an item has been overdue for 30 days. If materials are returned, the $75 fee will be waived, but the $35 will still be charged. Items that are overdue for 30 days will cost $50.00. Lost items wil cost $125.00. Any questions on this can be directed to any one of the library staff.

Non-seminary patrons may purchase a courtesy card, good for one year, for $10.00 which entitles checkout of up to 5 books..

Food and Drinks

Food is not allowed in the library but drinks in CLOSABLE containers are permitted.  No food or drinks are allowed in the computer lab in the library.

Reserve Books

Professors will often place books on the reserve shelves behind the circulation desk. The usual types of reserves are strict (2-hour use and overnight), 3-day and 7-day. However, professors may develop any other reserve procedures that they would like.

Pfeiffer Library

A number of years ago the collection of Dr. Charles Pfeiffer was willed to the ATS library. These books are denoted in the catalog with a "PFLIB" at the end of the call numbers of each entry in the catalog. These books are shelved together on the main level of the library.

Computer Lab and Christian Education Room

Christian education curricula and teacher training materials are kept in a room which is located at the east end of the north side of the library. These materials are identified in the catalog by "C.E.M." above the call number.

The computer lab contains four computers for the use of faculty and students. There is also a 10 computer lab in the Gerber Building for students to use.  Patrons may access the Ashland University computer network and may utilize word processing and printing capabilities along with email, Internet, and other software applications.  A full service lab is also available in the Gerber building.

Study Carrels

Individual study carrels are located on both sides of the library. They are available for rental for $10.00 per quarter or $25.00 per school year to ATS students on a first-come first-serve basis.  Library books which are placed on the carrels must be checked out.  The library is not responsible for lost or stolen items, including ATS library books.  Carrels not rented may be used by anyone on a daily basis.

Archives

The archives and rare books room is located on the east end of the balcony on the north side of the library. The library is the depository for the records of The Brethren Church. Archival materials must stay in the library.

Periodical Indexes

There are a number of periodical indexes which index specifically religious journals. The largest of these is Religion Index One. Others include Christian Periodical Index, Guide to Social Science and Religion in Periodical Literature, Religious and Theological Abstracts, Old Testament Abstracts and New Testament Abstracts.

Also, Religion Index One and Religious Index Two as well as the Index to Book Reviews in Religion are available online through Ohio Link.  The ATLA Religion Index can be accessed through the AU Library homepage under "Research Databases."

Interlibrary Loan

The library will request books and journal articles which are not held in this library. There usually is no cost for books but students will be expected to pay for copies of journal articles if there are costs involved. Request forms are at the circulation desk.
