Declaring a Major

Declaring a major in college isn't always easy.  Knowing the true subject of the major, the careers you could have with it, and the classes needed for it are all questions that should run through your mind.  While they are questions that don't get answered immediately, thinking them through is certainly important in order to pursue the major you wish.  Our office can help you complete self evaluations, identify goals, and review your academic background in comparison to each major.

Weekly Progress

How do your monitor your weekly progress in a class?  Talking to the professor first and foremost is very important.  However, we can help you in this regard as well.  We can talk about the importance of setting goals within a class and meeting them, setting aside certain time for class preparation, etc.  This prepares you for concerns within the class before they come up.  We can also talk to you about other issues that are affecting your academics.

Choosing an Advisor

While you ultimately decide where your major will take you, knowing who to contact about assistance is one of the most important decisions you can make.  Scheduling your courses according to your four year plan, knowing the rigors of each course, and planning around your courses are all concerns.  Picking the right advisor within your field of study makes all of the difference.  While your preference may vary based upon your knowledge of faculty members, picking someone whom you communicate well with is vital.   We can help you decide which advisor is for you.

Referral

If you cannot answer the question, the best way to help a person is to know who can.  Any academic concern certainly merits a trip to our office.  However, we want you to get any specific concerns within your major addressed by the person whom has the most experience with it.  Referring you to department chairs or other individuals on campus can be in your best interest from time to time.  If you aren't sure who to ask about class concerns, always start with us!

Four Year Plan

Outlining your plan for graduation is sure to have a few bumps in the road along the way.  However, outlining the plan early is important for prioritizing classes with other commitments that need to be fulfilled for graduation.  Knowing the classes that are typically taken each year, the hours a semester will average, and the availability of classes all require planning in advance.  We can help you in each of these areas!

Study Assistance

Sometimes confusion in a class doesn't necessarily mean the content itself is too complex.  Your approach to it is just as vital to success.  Communication with the professor, taking notes, or even study habits can be the primary reason for your struggles.  We can meet with you individually to find out your exact concerns about a particular class before helping you take steps towards improving your performance!
