English Department Testing Policy

The English Department at Ashland University maintains its own testing program which does not grant credit for the CLEP exam or waive the requirement for English 101, but permits a student who demonstrates sufficient expository writing ability to skip English 101 and move directly into 102. The three hours skipped must be made up by such students by taking a writing or literature course (numbered 200 or above) beyond the Humanities literature requirement.

Students granted permission to take the test will write a paper under a controlled situation and must do the paper during the first week of classes. The paper will be argumentative. The paper will be graded by three members of he English department, and all three must agree that the paper presented is of A quality. Grades will be based on the following concerns:

  1. The paper will contain a sound thesis statement.
  2. The thesis will be developed in depth with specific detail.
  3. The development will be couched in a sound structure.
  4. The development will be logical.
  5. The paper will be largely free from intrusive mechanical errors.
Students seeking permission to take the test should make a request to the English Department chair in writing, and this may be done at any summer drive-in or during a visit to the campus (they may be turned into the Director of Academic Advising or the English Department secretary, 218 Arts & Humanities Building). In the letter, the student should indicate the titles of the English classes taken in sophomore, junior, and senior years and the grades received for those courses. The letter should also indicate any other evidence of college competence in writing, including awards, special publications, yearbook and school paper activity. Students who apply should check with the secretary in the English office as soon as possible upon coming to the campus in the Fall to make an appointment to take the test. The test will be given during the first week of classes.

NOTE: Students should register for English 101 at the time of registration and should attend classes until informed of their success on the test, at which time they will be guided into English 102 or some other appropriate class.
