Ashland University started Sport Clubs during the 1999-2000 school year. These clubs give the Ashland University student an opportunity to compete at a competitive level against other Universities or to just have a more organized and structured group. These clubs will give the Ashland University community many recreational activities that they could not receive from other aspects of campus recreation; Ashland has formed eight Sport Clubs for the 1999-2000 school year.

The Sport Clubs Program at Ashland University will be very successful, due in part to the philosophy of the Intramural and Campus Recreation program. Any student who wants to start a club will be given consideration. If the interest within the campus community is big enough, the Sport Clubs Program will listen to the idea. Another reason for success of the program will be the leadership and creativity shown by the student managers. The program must have a student dedicated enough to take control of the program. The leadership displayed by the student manager will be the main factor in the program's being successful.

There are four types of clubs that can be formed and they are:

Recreational Clubs: Program's that reserve facility space to play their sport, socialize, and to have fun without the competitive nature. Some of these clubs charge dues for membership.

Competitive Clubs: These clubs compete with other university or town sponsored sport clubs and travel to different events/games throughout the year. these clubs are more serious in nature and usually involve trying out for the club. Most of these clubs charge membership dues to belong to the club.

Special Events Clubs: The main purpose of these clubs are to travel to different areas to participate in their club activity. Most of these clubs charge membership dues to cover the costs of travel and lodging for their trips.

Fitness/Martial Arts Clubs: These clubs strive to increase individuals' physical well-being through physical and/or mental strengthening. Some of these clubs charge dues for membership
