Foreign Language WebCAPE Assessment

Congratulations on your admission to Ashland University!

The Foreign Language Department at Ashland University extends you a warm welcome to our community and would like to remind you that the study of a foreign language compliments any other academic area whether you take basic language classes, minor in or decide to double-major in a language. The ability to communicate across languages and cultures helps you secure a job in the future in any field.

If you have studied Spanish or French in high school, please take a few minutes of your time to complete a language proficiency study.  This information will allow you to make an informed decision about your academic plans.  Answering the questions does not mean that you will be required to take a language course at Ashland University However, Ashland University students may fulfill their GPS institutional graduation requirement with the study of foreign languages:

  • with two semesters of a language not previously studied - begin in SPAN 171 or FREN 151
  • through completion of Intermediate II level of foreign language (FREN 252 & SPAN 272)
  • through the value added option - the course indicated by placement.  Value added courses are SPAN 172, 271, 272 and FREN 152, 251 and 252.

Correct placement for all options is crucial for Ashland University students' academic success. Placement is determined by the number of years of high school study and two of the following three placement indicators: GPA, ACT and WebCape score.  Please take a few minutes to complete this assessment, regardless of your intended major to help you determine which Global Passport Strategies (GPS) track to pursue; you can do this from March 1 to May 30, 2013.

Visit this page to learn more about the WebcCape study and to participate.  The FAQ page will answer all of your questions regarding placement.  Remember that the password to take WebCape is "password".

Thank you for your participation!
