Juvenile Collection
The juvenile collection (children's books), located on the second floor of Ashland University Library, includes award winning titles such as Newbery and Caldecott Medal and Honor books, Coretta Scott King award books, ALA Best Books for Young Adults, Alex Award Winners, and Children's and Teacher's Choice award books. Titles added to the juvenile collection are evaluated using professional reviews prior to purchase. An example of professional review journals used includes, Booklist, Horn Book Magazine, and School Library Journal.
To help students using the juvenile collection, LibGuides and web page resources have been developed for general use and specific course assignments.

This LibGuide features information on a variety of frequently requested children’s literature subjects. Learn more about Art, Dance, Theater, and Music, Exceptionalities, Holidays, Math, and Physical Education.
- LIBGUIDE: CHILDREN'S LITERATURE AWARD BOOKS
This LibGuide details IRC reference and book review resources and information about prominent ALA children's literature awards such as the Caldecott Medal, Newbery Medal, and Coretta Scott King Award.
- LIBGUIDE: GRAPHIC NOVELS
Use this LibGuide as a starting point for information on Graphic Novels. Included are finding aids for graphic novels in the juvenile and general circulating collection, library database resources, and internet links.
- MOCK CALDECOTT PANELS
Mock Caldecott panel sessions have been held with students in Dr. Mary Rycik's children's literature course since Fall 2002. Each fall and spring term, students participate in this activity in the Instructional Resource Center.
- CALDECOTT MEDAL AWARD BOOKS
A web mix created with SymbalooEDU features quick catalog links to Caldecott Award winning titles. Also included are links to the ALSC web site which features terms and criteria for the Caldecott Award.
- NEWBERY AWARD BOOKS
A web mix created with SymbalooEDU features quick catalog links to Newbery award winning titles. Also included are links to the ALSC web site that features terms and criteria for the Newbery Award.
- LEVELED BOOK KITS: JUVENILE
Book kits are part of the IRC juvenile collection selected for use with guided reading. Each kit, housed in a red folder complete with book covers for easy browsing, consists of a single title and includes one hard copy, six soft copies (paperback), and information pertaining to recommended reading levels.
