Studying Business Management allows you to develop managerial and business skills to succeed in a competitive business world. No matter what organization you will work for, our program will provide the knowledge and tools to work efficiently and effectively to succeed in business.

These essential skills always include planning, organizing, leading and coordinating business activities successfully to gain and retain competitive advantage. These four main functions recur through the organization and are highly integrated. Success is the quality of the journey. Your journey for success begins with a solid foundation in business fundamentals (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, and Economics). This foundation is utilized to reinforce the key aspects of our Business Management majors. Here are some examples of our program curriculum offerings:

The curriculum begins by taking a macro approach (MGT 307 - Organizational Theory and Design) to studying the Organizational Theory and Design mastered by successful companies—Wal-Mart, Apple, etc. A computer simulation entitled “The Manager” allows students to design their own organizational structure, as they compete in teams and generate profits for their company. This hands–on learning helps to reinforce the macro approach in business.
MGT318 - Organizational Behavior is a micro approach in the study of human behavior. We engage students in topics related to motivation, leadership, group and team dynamics, decision making techniques, conflict resolution, and organizational development. A business simulation entitled “Manager’s Workshop” is utilized in developing student’s skills for handling critical situations at the workplace.
Students may select a number of business electives in choosing courses they are interested in studying.

Example: You choose four courses in Human Resource Management to emphasize a desired area of study for your career development.

Learn the Key Skills Utilized by Successful Managers and Executives
Students will develop managerial and business skills to succeed in a competitive business world. Leadership skills - Students will learn their capacity to manage, drive employee and customer satisfaction, and accelerate profits as you examine the role leadership plays in the performance of business. Decision-making skills - Students will learn how to make timely and well-considered decisions leading your team to spectacular and well-deserved success. Conflict Resolution skills - Students study and practice how to resolve conflict which is an important skill to utilize when working with co-workers. Problem Solving skills - a business problem may occur within an organization. Wherever and whatever the problem, we’ll teach you how identify it causes and recommended solutions to resolve it immediately.

Join Our Organizations & Societies
Society of Human Resource Management - The Ashland University student chapter of SHRM engages students in the field of Human Resource Management. Students meet on a regular basis with Human Resource professionals in the field of Compensation, Benefits, Global Human Resources, Labor Relations, Diversity and Organizational & Employee development. Students have the opportunity to pursue HR Certification from the National SHRM headquarters. Ashland University students compete with other Ohio universities and colleges in the Ohio HR games yearly. SHRM has become the cornerstone for online tools, professional development, and resources for the human resource community.
College of Business & Economics Pre-Law Society - Students interested in studying for the LSAT will meet and prepare for this exam. Princeton Review will send all materials—test booklets, answer sheets, proctoring instructions and a FedEx return envelope. The practice exam is proctored by Dr. Dan Sullivan.
