Dr. Gordon Swain, Professor of Mathematics, will be leading a group of AU students to Peru in May 2009. This South American nation includes the semi-arid Pacific coast, the high Andes, and the Amazon jungle. This tour, with an emphasis on the cultural transition from Inca to colonial society, will sample from all three regions of Peru: the coast, the mountains, and the jungle. A three-credit hour, spring 2009, Honors course, in addition to the two-week Study Abroad trip, is available to qualified students.
We will start in the bustling coastal city of Lima. Our tour of this capital city, founded in 1535, will include the modern neighborhoods, the colonial churches and plazas, and the famous Larco Museum and Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Trips to ancient pyramids and excavations near the city will display the power and development of Peru’s ancient cultures.
Next we visit Cuzco, the once capital of the Inca empire, nestled in a scenic valley high in the Andes mountains. The highlight of this part of the trip is a daylong trip to the enigmatic lost city of Machu Picchu, where we will explore the hundreds of well-preserved ruins of houses, temples, even palaces, and try to guess what its real role in Inca society was.
The last leg of the tour takes us to Puerto Maldonado, the jumping-off point to our venture into the Amazon rainforest. We will walk into the jungle on the narrow trails of the Tambopata National Preserve, take a boat ride on the Madre de Dios river, and stay overnight in a local eco-lodge. This area is known as the biodiversity capital of the world due to the extraordinary number of different animal and plant species on display.
