Spring 09 - REL340 Religion and the Civil Rights Movement in America Service Learning in Mississippi, March 6 - 15, 2009 This course examines the involvement and non-involvement of churches and people of faith in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. With only ten students in the class expect in depth discussion and exploration of the history of America 's racialized society and both African American and white religious responsibilities for, and responses to social injustice. We will read autobiographies and primary documents. Over Spring Break the class will travel to Mississippi, visiting historical sites and meeting with veterans of the Civil Rights Movement. Spending time at the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at the University of Mississippi we will meet political leaders, church workers and educators involved in the ongoing work of racial reconciliation and justice. We will also volunteer with an after school literacy program in Rome -- an impoverished community in the Mississippi Delta.
