Outside Scholarships

Ashland University intends to give students who receive an outside scholarship the maximum benefit possible. Students are required to report to the Financial Aid Office, in writing, the name of the scholarship and the amount awarded for each academic year as soon as the student becomes aware of his/her eligibility for the outside award. The outside grant or scholarship will be added to the other aid the student is entitled to, as long as total financial aid does not exceed a student’s need or cost of attendance.

Your outside scholarship search for the following academic year should start in the fall. Some helpful websites for national scholarship searches are www.finaid.org, www.fastweb.com and www.collegeboard.com. You should also check with your hometown’s Chamber of Commerce, Education Foundations, City Hall or even with your high school’s guidance counselor to learn about local sources of funding. Below is a list of outside scholarship sources that have been sent to Ashland University to disseminate to our students.

Essay Topics

Topic 1 – Financial Statements & Business Models

Understanding how to view and analyze a financial statement is one of the most fundamental skills necessary to succeed in business.

In 600 words, please tell us about a past business you have worked for and which financial statement you think is the most important to their business and why.

Feel free to refer to our Introduction to Financial Statement Analysis modules if you need to learn more or brush up on your financial statement basics.

Topic 2 – Should You Sue Your Customer?

Customers are the lifeblood of every business. We work day after day to find, attract, and retain our customers.

But what happens when the customer does not pay and you get stiffed with the bill?

As a B2B collection agency, The Kaplan Group sees these situations daily. Unfortunately, the alternative of going to court needs to be considered in many of the claims placed with our collection agency. Often times these neglected invoices can be collected without relying on the legal process, but unfortunately some of our clients eventually face the decision of whether or not to sue a customer that is long past due on payments.

To address this type of situation, we created a flowchart that answers the question: “Should you sue your customer?

Please review the flowchart and write 600 words telling us each of the following:

  • One situation where you SHOULD sue your customer.
  • One situation where you SHOULD NOT sue your customer.

In each scenario, explain what major factors you considered when determining whether or not to pursue a lawsuit.  Be creative – simply repeating what is in the flowchart will not result in a winning essay.

Here at John Foy & Associates, we are known as the “Strong Arm of Georgia”. We are a tough Atlanta Personal Injury law firm that will fight to the finish for our clients. But our associates know that not every battle is fought in the courtroom. Fighting a disease requires more than a legal “Strong Arm”-it requires a dedicated team of medical staff, loved ones and countless more. Fighting leukemia requires determination, drive and diligence in both the patient and the patient’s loved ones. Often, the battle is a solitary one, isolating the patient and family. Our firm associates recognize this. That’s why we are delighted to introduce the first-ever John Foy & Associates “Strong Arm” Leukemia Scholarship in time to honor Leukemia month in September. Our $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one college student who has battled leukemia or whose life has been affected by it.

“We are honored to be a part of this brave community,” said firm founder John M. Foy. “We started this scholarship to raise awareness of the issues that face leukemia patients and their family members.”

Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, and it’s one of the most diagnosed in adults. A phenomenal amount of medical research has been successful in raising the survival rate in children from 10% in the 1970s to more than 80% today. If you or someone you love have been affected by this disease, you have already been in the fight of your life. Now you have a chance to attend college and move in a positive direction, by educating yourself to secure a brighter future. As attorneys, we appreciate the intrinsic value of a college, not just as a formal education but also as a way to advance your life. Let us help you help yourself.

The John Foy & Associates “Strong Arm” Leukemia Scholarship is open to high-achieving college students who meet this criteria:

  1. You or a loved one have been affected by leukemia.
  2. You are enrolled in an accredited college or university as an undergraduate or you are an incoming freshman at an accredited institution in the United States.

To apply, you must write a 500 to 1000 word essay on one of the three topics listed below and submit an official high school or college transcript. You may only apply online at this website.

Our attorneys will determine a selection committee to choose the winner and the winner will be announced publicly through the media and featured on our website. It is our hope that our scholarship program will inspire young people who have been affected by this very common type of cancer to lead inspired lives.

Deadline for Applications: Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Application Essay Topics:

Write a 500 to 1,000 word essay on one of these three topic questions:

  2. What adjustments have you made as student to accommodate your or a loved one’s leukemia?
  3. What one obstacle do people with leukemia face that you would like the general public to know about?

Include a paragraph statement on how this scholarship would benefit you. This paragraph will not count towards the word count of this essay.

100 Great Scholarships for Master’s Degree Study

Compiled by Kelsey Fox
Published April 2015

Despite the challenges and stress of assessment tests, applications, homework, and research, the hardest part about deciding to pursue a Master’s degree is often the question of how to pay for it. While most graduate schools accept financial aid in the form of federal student loans, you may have already accrued a hefty debt while paying for your undergraduate years. Scholarships, grants, and fellowships require a little extra effort to achieve, but they can prove to be a career-changing benefit to any Master’s student struggling to juggle coursework and research (not to mention maintaining a balanced diet of something other than ramen noodles).

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of 100 great scholarships for Master’s degree study. The scholarships are separated into subjects such as Arts, Classics, or STEM (among others), and include links to further information about applying to each one. Though they differ in things like general requirements, each of the following scholarships have some things in common:

• All of these scholarships are offered annually or bi-annually
• Each scholarship offers monetary awards of at least $500, with most of them awarding amounts over $1,000
• Every scholarship on this list is from a well-respected, large, and legitimate organization
• All of these scholarships are open to Master’s students (though some may also accept applications from doctoral candidates, too)

The Advocates at Driggs, Bills & Day are happy to announce our new scholarship program.   Everyone at our firm, attorneys and assistants alike, values education and helping those in need.  We also understand that school can place a tremendous financial strain on both students and their families.  In an effort to help with the costs of attending college, we are excited to be offering two $1,000 scholarships for the 2015-2016 (spring) and 2016-2017 (fall) school year to current or prospective college students.

The application process:

  • After considering the applications, we will select five finalists and post their essays on ourblog and Google + page. The two students that generate the most “buzz” are the winners!

There will be one award of $1,000 for the Spring semester of 2016, and one award of $1,000 for the Fall semester of 2016.

Steinger, Iscoe & Greene Latin Heritage Law Student Scholarship

Steinger, Iscoe & Greene are proud to serve the people of Florida and California and to give back to our community. Since 1997 we have worked to represent those injured by the carelessness and negligence of others and to help victims and their families get back on their feet. Now we are pleased to present a $1,000 scholarship to one student of Hispanic descent seeking to obtain a law degree.

We believe that young Latino and Latina leaders are capable of innovation and creative new approaches to law, business and community concerns. We believe that these young leaders have a great cultural heritage to draw upon as well as unique individual experiences of their own. Our hope is that the practice of law provides a means for these leaders to reach their full potential and transform our shared community.

At present, the Hispanic community is under-represented in the field of law. We’re launching the Steinger, Iscoe & Greene Latin Heritage Law Student Scholarship in order to help change that. This scholarship will be awarded to support one high-achieving Hispanic student planning to pursue a career in law.

Applicants will be judged based on the quality of their essay, the content of their application and their academic merits. We encourage all eligible students to apply and look forward to awarding this scholarship.
