Why Choose Ashland University?

Why should you choose Ashland University for your pre-professional science education?

Academics

  • Since 2004, 90 percent of our students who have applied to professional health programs like medical school have been accepted.
  • Class sizes are small, and laboratory sections are all taught by professors who hold advanced degrees in their area of study. Two of our science faculty members are recent recipients of the university‚Äôs Taylor Teaching Award for excellence in teaching, and all of our faculty members are committed to providing an opportunity for you to succeed.
  • We are one of just a few science programs in the country to offer an undergraduate major in toxicology, as well as courses in pharmacology and embryology.
  • Coursework stresses critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for admission to and success in medical school and other professional programs.
  • Our human anatomy and physiology classes allow our students the unique opportunity to be involved in student-based cadaver work in our human cadaver lab, which is uncommon in colleges and universities of similar size.

Research

  • Opportunities to conduct one-on-one research with faculty on topics such as the mechanisms of cataract formation, the effects of environmental toxins on organisms and synthesis of new polymer materials with possible biomedical applications start early in your studies at Ashland. They will further develop your critical thinking and communication skills, and set you apart when applying to professional schools. Faculty/student research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
  • You will work in newly renovated laboratories with cutting edge instrumentation.
  • Our students regularly present the results of their research at regional and national conferences and co-author scientific papers with faculty.

Guidance

  • You will have strong advising by science faculty to guide you through the process of preparing for and applying to professional schools.
  • Outstanding faculty mentor students and take an active interest in their success.
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in peer advising sessions with other pre-professional science students, and join the student-run Pre-Health Club.

Networking

  • A network of Ashland University alumni who are actively working in the health sciences field or attending graduate school is available to all undergraduates. Students are encouraged to reach out to these alumni for further guidance in their studies.
  • Students in our programs gain unique experience and develop valuable relationships during internships. Two science students in the past two years have been admitted into the prestigious Chester Scholars summer program at Metro Health hospital in Cleveland.
