Vigil Against Violence Remembers Victims

1/13/14 ASHLAND, Ohio - The Ashland Center for Nonviolence (ACN), in partnership with the Center for Religious Life and the Office of Diversity at Ashland University, will host a Vigil Against Violence on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 20. The event will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Chapel at Ashland University. The vigil is a community event and is free and open to the public.

The goal of the vigil is to remind people that the victims of violence are individuals—mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, daughters and sons. They are not just statistics. By being reminded of the personhood of victims, vigil participants are challenged to do more to reduce violence in our world, our community, our families and ourselves.

Last year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, in its first Vigil Against Violence, ACN remembered the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Such a vigil also commemorates the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose mission was a non-violent confrontation with racist practices in America.

The Ashland Center for Nonviolence at Ashland University is located on the AU campus. The Center seeks a world in which human conflict at all levels can be resolved without resorting to violence and in which social justice can be realized.
