Each spring, the Ashland University Coburn Gallery hosts the Senior Art and Design Exhibition that features the capstone experience for graduating art majors. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic -the exhibition will be going virtual this semester.
Bringing together artworks created by graduating seniors in the Department of Art and Design, the 2020 Senior Art and Design Virtual Exhibition will open on Thursday, April 30th via the Coburn Art Gallery’s Facebook page.
“While the 2020 Senior Art + Design Exhibition provides the capstone experience for graduating art and design majors, it represents more than just students’ studio art experiences,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “For these students of the liberal arts, the exhibition is the culmination of their undergraduate careers at Ashland University.”
This year’s virtual exhibition will run from April 30th through May 9, 2020, and includes graphic design, illustration, sculpture, digital art, painting, and video.
Senior Art + Design Exhibiting artists – Halle Sanford, Michael Wolfrum, Rachel Brooks, Allie Hamilton, Robby Young, Graydon Flynn, Jackson Bay, and Sophi Cudworth.
Halle Sanford, from Caldwell, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in Painting, a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and a minor in Art History. She is a 2016 graduate of Caldwell High School. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Lisa Sanford. Throughout the last four years at Ashland University, she has been a member of Art Club, as well as exhibiting work at three Student Juried Shows. Sanford also served as the Graphic Design intern at Chandler Systems in Ashland, Ohio for the summer of 2019. Upon graduation (May 2020), Sanford plans to find a job in the field of Graphic Design.
Wolfrum, from Defiance, OH, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Art with a concentration in Graphic Design and minors in Computer Science and Web Technology. Wolfrum is the youngest son of Heather and Patrick Wolfrum and a graduate of Ayersville High School. During his time at Ashland, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, AU Art Club, Interfraternity Council, College Democrats, Order of Omega Greek Honorary, AU GIVS, and the St. Jude Executive Board. He has won awards for his involvement in Fraternity and Sorority Life as well as his own chapter at a national level for his time as chapter president and vice president of the Interfraternity Council. Michael has had internships at both 5 B’s Embroidery and Screen Print, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Headquarters, and continues to serve on the Communications Commission for Kappa Sigma at the International level, helping in various graphic design and branding needs. Michael hopes to secure a graphic design position in the Hampton Roads, VA area or the Detroit Metropolitan Area.
Rachel Brooks, from Coolville, Ohio, and is the daughter of Robert and Katrina Brooks. Brooks graduated from Eastern Local High School in Reedsville, Ohio with sitting honors in 2016. She will be graduating with a major in Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, focused in Digital Art, and a minor in Creative Writing. She is currently a member of Art Club, Symphonic Band, and was a member of Marching Band. Brooks plans on presenting in the upcoming URCA symposium. She hopes to work as an animator and illustrator after graduating.
Allie Hamilton, from St. Clairsville, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor of Art in Fine Art with a concentration in Printmaking and a minor in Art History. During her time at Ashland, she was a member of the Art Club and a sister of Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity. She was elected to executive positions within each organization and served as Secretary for Theta Phi Alpha and as Secretary and President for Art Club. She has exhibited in the Juried Student Art + Design Exhibition twice and will exhibit in the upcoming URCA symposium. Hamilton has also had the opportunity to work for the Coburn Gallery at Ashland University as an assistant for the past two years. After graduation Hamilton plans to attend graduate school for a Master’s degree in museum studies or art history.
Robby Young, from Ashland, Ohio, is the son of Scott and Jackie Young. He transferred to AU his junior year from Wittenberg University to be a part of AU’s great art and business programs. He will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Art with a concentration in Graphic Design, and a minor in Marketing. While attending AU he was a member of AU Art Club, and a part of Ashland Catholic Group, The Melting Pot, and The Well. Robby had two simultaneous internships over the summer one in Charleston, SC at Seacoast Church, and one done remotely as a graphic designer for AU. These internships helped him tremendously with his design skills, his ability to work in a team, and have helped stretch his creative boundaries. After graduation, Robby plans to find a job in the graphic design field in Columbus, OH or Charleston, SC.
Graydon Flynn, Medina, OH, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Art with a concentration in Graphic Design and minors in Computer Science. Graydon Flynn comes from a family of nine and is the second youngest, a graduate of Medina High School. While at Ashland University, Graydon has become a member of AU Art Club, Boardgame club, and Eagles For Pride. He has an internship at the Coburn Art Gallery and has helped promote the Gallery through design. Graydon plans to continue exploring similar opportunities after graduating May 2020.
Sophi Cudworth, from Kent, Ohio, is the daughter of Sue and Greg Cudworth. She is graduating from Ashland with a Bachelor of Art in both Digital Media Production and Commercial art: Video Production Concentration. While attending AU, Sophi was part of the collegiate volleyball team and has earned many honors during her 4 years of playing including GLIAC all academic excellence award (2017-2019), 1st (2019) and 2nd (2018) team All-GLIAC. Her academic honors include Dean’s List (4 semesters), Honors Convocation Award for art (2018, 2019) and JDM upcoming award (2018). After graduation, Sophi plans to go to Seattle for the summer while pursuing freelance work in digital media.
Jackson Bay is from Powell, Ohio and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Commercial Art with a focus in graphic design. He is very passionate about continuously refining his craft and improving upon everything he creates. He works an internship at Good Deed Entertainment, an Independent film studio, which has greatly aided him in collaborating with teams to serve marketing objectives. Upon graduation he will seek similar opportunities as well as those focused on branding and other graphic design fields.
