Artist Talk-Allison Elia

The Coburn Gallery at Ashland University will host an artist talk featuring exhibiting artist  Allison Elia  at 7 p.m. in Ronk Lecture Hall in the Dwight Schar College of Education. The artist talk is free and open to the public. The talk is sponosred by the Coburn Art Gallery and the Department of Art.

Elia, who is from the Stow, Ohio, area, graduated in 2013 with an MFA in Artisanry Ceramics from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, New Bedford, and earned her BFA in Painting and Ceramics from the University of Akron.

“Elia’s artworks are interested in the transient internal experiences that are deeply embedded in the memory of an individual, without the limits of bodily endurance or the longevity of external blemishes and scars,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “Her work explores the coexistence of guilt/weight and hope/buoyancy within a person.”

Petry said Elia’s conceptual narrative streams throughout the emotional and psychological spectrum of guilt (fault), shame (exaggerated or imagined fault), longing (desire to remove oneself from fault and hindrances), and hope (anticipation of relief from fault). “Her large-scale ceramic figures are ‘sculptural snapshots’ that capture a single climactic moment of internal experience before it naturally shifts, dissolves, resolves, or fades into memory,” she said.

Elia is currently living and working in Roswell, Ga. She continues to sculpt her large-scale ceramic figures as a ceramics artist in residence at the Roswell Art Center West. She works as a studio technician and the instructor of Intro to Handbuilding and Figurative Sculpture at the center. She also is an active member of NCECA and has exhibited her work locally and internationally.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and is free and open to the public. For more information about the reception or exhibition, call 419.289.5652 or visit us on Facebook.
