Henry Wessel did his senior teaching experience at Sangaree Middle School in Goose Creek, Berkeley County, SC. This middle school has a total enrollment of 734 students with approximately 53 full-time teachers. Their doors opened to students for the first time at the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year. Sangaree Middle is a part of the Southern Regional Education Board’s network for school reform called Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW). The leadership team at SRM has committed to ensuring that all students are afforded the opportunity to learn at high levels. Students are provided with a rigorous core curriculum that is supported by the related arts programs.
Henry taught seventh grade world history while he was at Sangaree Middle. He enjoyed working with the students and loved being in the classroom. Teachers in training at Ashland University spend a whole semester in the classroom in their senior year, as well as a significant block of time in their junior year. This gives the Ashland University students experience in the classroom while also gaining knowledge from the teachers in the school system. AU students benefit from being in multiple environments during their various teaching assignments. This gives real world experience that is a valuable asset when they graduate.
