Maggie Cogar, professional instructor of journalism and digital media, joined the Ashland University faculty in 2016. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D in Communication and Information with a focus in Mass Media from Kent State University. While attending Kent State University to obtain her doctorate, she taught journalism courses as an adjunct and served as a research assistant in the Center for Scholastic Journalism. She holds a B.A. in Integrated Language Arts Education and an M.A. in Journalism Education: Reporting and Editing from Kent State University. Before returning to Kent State to pursue her Ph.D, Cogar taught high school journalism and advised an award-winning student newspaper, both in print and online, for five years. She is active in the world of scholastic journalism and serves as an executive board member for the Ohio Scholastic Media Association and is the state director for the national Journalism Education Association. She also has experience as a freelance journalist in writing, photography and design. Her research areas of interest include scholastic media, censorship, and journalistic pedagogy, while her teaching areas include media writing, media law and ethics, media effects and mass communication theory.
