Theatre -Design Track

Bachlelor of Arts in Theatre (B.A.)

Our Design/Technical track provides students with opportunities to develop the skills of theatre designers and technicians. Students can take classes in costume, lighting and scene design where they learn analysis, rendering and communication skills that prepare them to work on department productions. While honing their design skills in class, students also learn the technical skills necessary to make their designs a reality in the scene and costume shops. Young designers often find work as stitchers, carpenters, electricians and scenic artists. This track is also helpful for students interested in stage management.

Many students interview with and are hired by professional theatre companies in the summer. Our Design/Tech students have worked as technicians for the following theatres:

  • Ohio Light Opera
  • Summer Stock at Findlay
  • Cedar Point
  • American Folklore Theatre
  • Surflight Theatre
  • Porthouse Theatre

Interview skills and design portfolios are assessed each year to meet the department student-learning outcome that students will be prepared to interview for professional theatre. Design/Technical track students present their resume and design portfolio or stage management materials each spring as part of the department’s Assessment Auditions and Interviews.

Our Design/Technical students have attended the following graduate schools:

  • The Ohio State University
  • Wayne State University
  • Kent State University
  • University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • University of Missouri-Kansas City
  • Michigan State University
  • New York University
  • University of South Carolina

In addition to courses in a specialized track, all Theatre majors take courses in acting, design, directing, dramatic literature, history and theatre technology. These foundation courses provide students with the fundamental skills and tools necessary to be a well-rounded
