MULTICULTURAL STEAM EDU
This "people first learning course" combines self-paced workbook activities with a two-night, three-day nature retreat at The Monarch Park Butterfly Way Station in Albany, Ohio. Explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) topics from the perspective of groups who are often ignored in the Western, post-industrial, valuation of knowledge . We will uncover the narratives of women, people who are indigenous, immigrants, people of color, people with disabilities, people who are LGBTQ, and people with low SES as they relate to STEAM and beyond! By studying diverse people's literature, inventions, crafts and textiles, and philosophies on "Mother Nature", we will unpack social justice issues pertaining to such as the STEAM achievement gap, environmental racism, climate change and the income gap, food deserts, habitat loss, and healing and spirituality. We will also learn hands-on skills that will help you help your diverse students connect to common STEAM themes.
The retreat is from June 9th, 2020 - 3:00pm to June 11th, 2020 - 3:00pm at the Monarch Park, 8351 Morris Rd, Albany, OH 45710.
