Course Description:

Don’t look away: Embracing anti-bias classrooms, Book Study

This course will briefly introduce cultural biases that exist in U.S. schools. Participants will independently read, Don’t look away: Embracing anti-bias classrooms, I. U. Iruka, S. M. Curenton, et.al.  and share journal responses following each chapter. It will provoke student participants (pre-service and practicing educators) to consider their own experiences and challenge themselves as social beings. Students will consider advocacy with respect to ethical interactions and social inequities within educational systems. Additionally, participants will consider an anti-bias concern or issue to further research and design a project to be shared with other professional educators. And lastly, participants will have the ongoing benefit of a supportive professional learning community (via social media) which will address current multicultural topics and cultural responsiveness in education.
