We will be reading, discussing, and implementing ideas from the book Outliers, The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. This book discusses a variety of theories for success and achievement based on research. The author talks about how we need to focus on a child’s culture, their family, their generation, and their upbringing. This book focuses on people whose achievements fall outside normal experience- follow a peculiar and unexpected logic, and in uncovering that logic, guides educators in making the most of human potential. This book has excellent input about achievement gaps and how the most successful people came to be that way. This book will teach a variety of ways to focus on each individual child to guide their achievement and show growth at all levels. Within the course, we will have required reading, discussion/reflection questions that tie into our reading to have answered, and we will be working with our colleagues to discuss ideas, strategies, and ways to improve student achievement and growth.
