A Double Helping: Serving Dual Language Learners-Individualizing education for all children is of primary importance. When children speak a different language, how do we find the tools to understand and utilize the unique strengths of the dual language learner? By participating in this online course, educators will be immersed in the latest research and best practices from a wide variety of settings. Using this network of educators, we will construct a framework for dual language learners that will use evidence-based strategies for screening, response-to-intervention, assessment, and treatment of this unique population. Through guided readings, videos, interactive discussions, and real world application activities, educators will develop a toolkit for their setting that will allow them to dynamically and effectively meet the needs of their multi-lingual students.
Students will develop an understanding for the strategies and skills necessary to serve dual language learners through guided readings, videos, interactive discussions, quizzes, real world application activities, and one final exam (multiple choice, open-ended and essay questions.)
• Identify common patterns and influential key factors of dual language development
• Apply understanding of patterns and key factors of dual language development and evidence-based strategies to distinguish between “language difference”
and “language disorder.”
• Learn how to dynamically apply and individualize evidence-based “best practices” to utilize the unique strengths of dual language learners and effectively support them.
