ESSEX School for the Gifted and Talented
at Ashland University

June 19-24, 2022

This is a weeklong virtual summer program for gifted high school students who will learn from experts in a variety of disciplines in small group settings.

Are you interested in teaching for Essex@Ashland?

We are looking for:

  • Forum speakers for two-hour small group morning sessions
  • Intensive faculty for daily 3.5 hour intensive course facilitation

Monday-Friday afternoons. All disciplines welcome!

Each morning, students attend a plenary session chosen from a wide variety of offerings. These sessions are a quick dip into topics of interest with a content expert and are dfferent every day.

  • Environmental Science at Home
  • Letting Go of Perfect
  • Being Smart Consumer of Statistics
  • Poetry Discussions
  • The Joy and Wonder of Pure Mathematics
  • En-ROADS Climate Workshop

Previously offered Intensives:

The afternoons are devoted to daily, in-depth small-group instruction in a topic of passion by an expert in the field. This mentorship will be carried throughout each afternoon during the week.

  • Singer-Songwriter Circle
  • The Story Inside (Identity Exploration)
  • Be the Change: Influential Voices in World Religions
  • Beyond the March (Social Justice Advocacy)
  • No Holds Bard: Full Throttle Shakespeare

Coming Summer 2022: Reinvest & Reinvent with the Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted and Talented™ at Ashland University 

The Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted and Talented at Ashland University is a weeklong virtual learning experience for rising sophmores, juniors, and seniors. 

Essex 2022 courses - to be announced December 2021.

  • When: Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted and Talented summer 2022 dates: June 19 - 24, 2022.
  • Deadline: Application due date: May 31, 2022.
  • Cost: $150.00 (financial assistance available – see Financial Aid application for more details).
  • Who: Rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors for the 2021-2022 school year, we want you to apply!!!!!

GENERAL INFORMATION

  1. The purpose of the Essex School is to provide enrichment experiences for rising eleventh and twelfth grade students who are identified as gifted and talented in Ohio. 

  2. The School will operate during June 19-24, 2022, virtually on VirBELA and Zoom. 

  3. Optional campus experience in October, 2022 – speakers, activities, campus tours, and more! 

  4. The School will explore academic and/or artistic pursuits at a level not always possible in the typical high school classroom. The topics addressed by the seminars and workshops will reflect the interests of the students, and will have an eye especially on salient contemporary issues. 

  5. College credit will be available for those who wish to earn one credit hour; and all students will receive a certificate of participation at the conclusion of the School. 

  6. The cost to attend the Essex School is $150.00. This cost can be assumed by family, district, and/or community of applicant. Financial assistance may be available for those who qualify. Full payment will be due April 15, 2022. Please make checks payable to Ashland University or use the button below to pay via PayPal.

  7. Applications for the Essex School will open on or before January 1, 2022. Intensive course descriptions will be available then. You will select your weeklong Intensive Course (PM) when you submit your application. Ask to be on the mailing list to be notified as we add Intensives and Plenary sessions. You can begin preparations now by downloading the application form for Step 1

  • Step 1 includes submission of:

    • Student Application Form - Student Information, Parent/Guardian Information, and Permission Signatures
    • Student Eligibility Form - Confirmation (form provided) of identification of giftedness in Ohio (or state of residence) in at least one area, completed and signed by a gifted education coordinator, gifted education teacher, guidance counselor, principal, or psychologist
    • Student Gift and Passion Share. What area of gift or passion would you like to share with the Essex team as we consider your application? See the application for more information
    • Selecting the Intensive (Intensives will be revealed in December, 2021!)
  • Step 2: Application is reviewed

    • Remitting Payment or indicating Financial Assistance (optional)
    • Selecting daily Plenary Sessions (AM)
    • Signing up for VirBELA training
  • Step 3: Acceptance notifications will be sent out via email by May 1, 2022, at the latest. Upon acceptance, applicants will be given instructions on finalizing the application by June 1, 2022

  • Step 4: VirBELA training
