Bio

Dr. James L. Olive, associate professor in the Department of Leadership Studies, joined the Ashland University faculty in 2010. Prior to joining Ashland’s faculty, Dr. Olive served on the University of Dayton’s Steering Committee for its successful reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2007 and as the Curriculum, Assessment & Technology Coordinator for UD’s School of Education and Allied Professions.

Dr. Olive’s research foci include LGBT issues in higher education, exploring the ways in which social class, gender, race, sexuality and ability shape the human experience (intersectionality) and the intellectual and identity development of postsecondary students. He has published articles in College & University; the Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research; the Journal of LGBT Youth; and Forum: Qualitative Social Research. Dr. Olive has also authored two book chapters and is currently co-editor of a book on intersectionality in educational research, which is due out in early 2015.  He currently serves on the editorial board for the American Secondary Education Journal.

Dr. Olive earned his Doctor of Philosophy in educational leadership and Master of Science in educational administration from the University of Dayton and his Bachelor of Science in education from The Ohio State University.
