Bio

Dr. Jim Rycik, Professor, was a middle grades reading specialist and language arts teacher in the Cleveland area for 20 years. He holds a BSEd. degree from Ohio University and MEd. and Ph.D. degrees from Kent State University. His particular research interests are inquiry learning and adolescent literacy. He served for five years on the Commission on Adolescent Literacy of the International Reading Association and is the co-author of the Commission's (1999) Position Statement on Adolescent Literacy as well as three books:  o What Adolescents Deserve; A Commitment to Students' Literacy Learning, o Teaching Reading in the Middle Grades: Understanding and Supporting Literacy Development o Phonics and Word Identification: Instruction and Intervention K-8. Dr. Rycik is the Editor of American Secondary Education, which is published by the Dwight Schar College of Education. He currently teaches courses in adolescent literacy and language arts at both the undergraduate and graduate levels including EDCI 563, EDCI 261 and EDCI 306.
