Scholars Program

The Purpose of the CONHS Scholars Program is to recognize traditional junior-ranked students annually within the Dwight Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CONHS) who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and who have exceptional potential for intellectual and professional growth.  The program provides a two year financial award, as well as opportunity for recognition, leadership experiences, specialized professional development and collaborative research opportunities.

The goals of the CONHS Scholars Program are:

  • To foster a passion for in-depth learning in an area of interest.
  • To enhance scholarly development and commitment to the profession.
  • To provide an enriched environment for understanding the values of the discipline.
  • To nurture the development of student leaders and future leaders in health care.
  • To develop a pool of gifted students for graduate study.

Criteria for Acceptance

The Scholars Program candidate will meet the following criteria for acceptance:

  • Be a traditional, full-time, second-semester sophomore within the CONHS with four continuous full-time semesters to completed degree requirements.*
  • Demonstrate a potential for success both within the College and within Ashland University’s core curriculum.
  • Demonstrate intellectual curiosity, as well as a passion for learning and interacting with other disciplines.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 at the conclusion of fall semester of sophomore year.

 *This includes:  A.) sophomores in their fourth semester, B.) non-transfer sophomores in their fourth semester who, as a result of advanced replacement credit, dual credit or credit from a post-secondary option, may be classified as a sophomore by the Office of Records and Registration, and C.) transfer students in their fourth semester at Ashland University


In the first semester of the junior year Scholars will receive $500. This will continue each semester that the Program obligations are fulfilled.

Application Process

Students may apply for admission to the CONHS Scholars Program during the spring semester prior to the start of their junior year.  The Scholars Program Application Form may be obtained from the Scholars Program Coordinators or from the CONHS website.

Complete the Scholars Program Application Form inclusive of the essay question.

Obtain and submit with completed application two letters of recommendation,
one from an Ashland University Professor and one from an outside professional source.

Submit completed application, essay response and two letters of recommendation in hard copy or electronically to the CONHS Scholars Program Coordinators by midnight of February 28th.
