A Note From the Program Director

Jackie Owens, Ph.D., RN, CNE
RN to BSN Program Director

First let me say how excited I am that you are seeking information about earning a  BSN! I once searched that same information, and it changed my life. I thought I was a  pretty fine nurse, having practiced almost 20 years – and, just like you, I was. Although I enjoyed learning, I was busy with two young children and work. What would coming  back to school do for me? Enough to make it worth my while? Enough for the sacrifices  my family would make?

If you are looking on this page, something has sparked your interest. Maybe you have always intended to return for a BSN. Maybe you want to pursue graduate education and advanced practice nursing – a great idea! Maybe your employer is putting pressure on you to earn that degree – many are because healthcare is such a complex environment, much more so than when I began my nursing career in 1980. Whatever the reason, I  thank you for checking out the Ashland University's RN to BSN program and hope that we might have the privilege to support you from the time you consider returning to school until you are handed your degree.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree prepares students to practice the art and science of professional nursing. Here you will be introduced to the profession’s theoretical knowledge base; the research for evidence-based practice; the focus on international perspectives in healthcare; the nursing process to families and aggregates in the community setting;  the role of nurse as leader and manager; the role of nurses in legal, ethical and political settings; and the highly technical and clinical skills needed for working with patients and their families in a variety of settings. This degree will provide a strong foundation for graduate education in nursing. We also offer specialty tracks in gerontology and school nursing licensure.

Here are the strengths of the AU RN to BSN program:

  • A liberal transfer policy
  • Hours of credit awarded for previous nursing education, experience and continuing education
  • Courses offered all semesters; begin when you’re ready!
  • The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation
  • Established in 1980; a history of providing quality RN to BSN education grounded in adult learning principles for the returning professional nurse.

Once you’re enrolled, you’ll enjoy the:

  • Convenience of quality online courses with strong support from nursing faculty.
  • Flexible progression with part-time and full-time options. Progress at your pace - speed up or slow down as needed.
  • Nursing faculty, with experience in BSN completion, who serve as academic advisors.
  • Professors with both academic credentials and real-world experience in the field. Our faculty members are first and foremost outstanding teachers who enjoy mentoring students. We look forward to working with you!

The AU RN to BSN program is ideal for adult students with family and work commitments. The online format has been carefully designed to meet the needs of a busy, working professional. The program offers a complete curriculum that fully prepares you for the added challenges faced in today’s demanding healthcare environment.

So, how about that sacrifice? Was it worth it? A hundred times over. When I graduated, from this very program, I was shocked to count 20 accomplishments that I had never before done in my years of practice in critical care and occupational health! Much to  my surprise, I continued on to graduate school so that I might teach nursing, something I had dreamed of doing since I was 19, but had not come into my life. The best outcome, however, was something I could not even imagine when I started: by the time I finished graduate school my two young daughters had grown to be young women talking about (and then pursuing) graduate degrees. Who knew that I was role modeling advanced education for them while they were “sacrificing?”

I am happy to help you in any way that I can as you make this decision (and once you’re here!). I look forward to working with you in class. As you consider Ashland University, please know that we want to support YOU as you return to school to pursue YOUR unique goals and grow in YOUR career as a nurse. I have shared a bit of my story - I  am eager to learn yours. Please feel free to contact me at jowens2@ashland.edu if I  can answer any questions about the AU RN to BSN program.

Thinking about the trajectory of my own nursing career, and those nurses who have made a difference for me, I often say: a lucky few will move nursing forward at the global level; some may enjoy that opportunity in a national arena. Each nurse has the chance to make a positive impact on the profession of nursing in his or her own backyard. Will you?

No doubt if you are looking for information about earning a BSN, you are making that positive impact already. I sincerely hope you will consider enrolling in our AU program to learn even more ways to make a difference in the lives of patients, families, communities and maybe even the world!
