STUDENTS WITH AUTISM

Topic: Autism
Instructor: Jodi Slonaker
Method: Online (OWRK)
Sponsor: Teach n' Kids Learn, Inc.
Center Offered: OLPD

Course Description:

According to Autism Speaks (2018) the CDC has increased its estimate of autism’s prevalence by 15 percent, to 1 in 59 children. Before teachers can engage students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in their classroom, they must first fully understand the challenges and barriers to students’ learning that ASD may cause.

This comprehensive instructional course provides proven methods to help educators and administrators understand Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the impact that having this disability has on students and their families, as well as the impact of this disorder at school.

The focus of this course is to help educators understand current research and information about ASD and learn how to help students no matter where they are on the autism spectrum be more productive and successful in the classroom.

Teachers will learn effective ways of helping students with ASD reduce stress, develop improved social skills that will allow students to be more successful in the classroom, cope with change, and improve classroom behaviors. Teachers will also be introduced to strategies for helping students with ASD reduce anxiety and become more flexible to allow for more successful learning opportunities in a general education classroom.
