STUDENTS W/ CHILDHOOD TRAUMA

The Supporting Our Students Through Childhood Trauma course provides opportunities for educators to identify a variety of classroom, environmental and societal factors that contribute to why students often experience intense stress, anxiety and trauma in their lives and to provide information on what to do to support and help students overcome any barriers they face to their personal and academic success. Information, reflective questions, classroom-centered activities and relevant research will be provided to support this goal. During the 6 modules of the course, educators will investigate a variety of influences on teaching and learning such as: student racial identity and cultural influences as well as teacher cultural influences and bias that impact student expectations and acceptance. The course will also identify and explore the impact of poverty and traumatic life experiences on student success both emotionally as well as academically. Educators will learn the warning signs, that indicate that a child may be emotionally fragile, engaging in self-harming behaviors or withdrawing emotionally from peers. When educators understand how to identify warning signs in their students, they will be able to connect students with the appropriate support and assistance to keep students healthy, engaged in learning and on track for success. The course will also explore how strong, positive teacher-student relationships foster higher levels of achievement for all students in a diverse classroom setting. Concepts such as self-empowerment, envisioning a positive future, goal-setting, peer collaboration and creating a positive classroom climate are some of the strategies that will help educators discover ways to create more equitable practices and create a brave learning community within the classroom.  Finally, educators will learn how to identify and break down barriers and create a sense of belonging in the classroom/school. Throughout the course, participants will be able to reflect on their own current practice and identify ways that they can better support their students to create a classroom environment where all students feel comfortable and confident in sharing their own thoughts, viewpoints, beliefs and opinions.
