Course Description:

This online course is a book discussion group surrounding the popular and controversial book Boys Adrift by Dr. Leonard Sax.  Sax, both a medical doctor and a clinical psychologist, explores the recent epidemic of underachieving boys.  He postulates that five factors are influencing this new trend:  1) teaching methods, 2) video games, 3) prescription drugs, 4) endocrine disruptors in the environment, and 5) the devaluation of masculinity.  This four-week course guides teachers through the book, critically examining both the scientific evidence and their own anecdotal experiences.  The course concludes with a plan to assist the boys in their classroom on their way to “achieving manhood.” There is an additional Instructional Fee paid directly to WVIZ/PBS.

No letter grades will be awarded for this course. Participants will received either an Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U).
