Course Description:

This is a graduate level class. However, undergraduate credit is available upon request. There are no changes in content, price, or expectations.

This course is based on 4 course sessions taught in regional locations to groups of early childhood educators. The Department of education has published new Early Learning Standards for all the disciplines including math. Standards are new for the early childhood community to be thinking about as they plan curriculum. In this course, the standards for math will be understood as a framework along with developmentally and culturally appropriate practices. This course will allow early childhood educators to explore the concepts that preschool-aged children are acquiring, practicing and refining in the mathematical areas of number sense and quantification, algebra and geometry. Educators will also have the opportunity to explore and practice a variety of teaching skills and strategies that support young children's construction of important mathematical concepts. Teachers will strengthen their skills in building upon children's incidental learning in intentional and specific ways represented in the pre-kindergarten indicators for Ohio Learning Content Standards for Mathematics.
