Gifted Education for the General Education Teacher

The Gifted Operating Standards for the State of Ohio have been revised to recognize the importance of supporting professional development for general education classroom teachers. The requirements for earning a “Teaching the Gifted” certificate include coursework in the nature and needs as well as in curriculum and instruction of an for gifted students. Completion of both courses can be applied toward a gifted endorsement as well as built into a master’s program.

Ashland University’s series of two 2-credit hour courses are designed to:

  • Have immediate usefulness to the learners

  • Be relevant to general education teachers

  • Offer a welcoming training environment so that all learners feel safe to participate

  • Be engaging

  • Be presented in a respectful manner, where learners have an opportunity to share individual experiences, questions and feedback
