Referring Students to Counseling Services

If you are concerned about the mental health or well-being of one of your students, we invite you to refer them to Ashland University Psychological Counseling Services.

Reasons for your referral may include:

  • Abrupt changes in behavior
  • Inappropriate bouts of crying or emotional outbursts
  • Irritability
  • Low self-esteem
  • Tardiness or poor attendance in class
  • Disruptive behavior in class
  • Changes in academic performance, such as low grades or missing assignments
  • Self-isolation or uncooperative behavior

We advise you to talk to the student first and express your concerns. You might inform the student of our services and offer to walk them to our office as a show of support.

If the student does not utilize Counseling Services and your concerns persist, we invite you to stop by our office to make an appointment or call us at 419-289-5200 to discuss the matter further. We can discuss methods of encouraging the student to come into the office on their own, as well as psychological concerns and communication avenues in general. However, as required by law, we cannot say whether a student is utilizing counseling services or provide information on the content or conversations of sessions, treatment plans for the student or progress made by the student.
