Religion Program Overview

The Religion program at Ashland University is for students who want to enrich their lives and the lives of others, with a broad approach to the study of faith traditions alongside their historical and cultural contexts. As a student of Religion, you will explore many aspects of Christian thought, history, beliefs and practices, as well as those of world religions. You will also examine how religious ideas and values shape our world.

This will be an intellectual journey - one that deepens and broadens your understanding of your own faith and increases your appreciation of other cultures and theologies. The program is sensitive to issues of faith development and focuses on spiritual and moral formation.

Learning Experiences

In the classroom, you will learn from both the faculty and your peers as you explore together some of the most significant questions ever asked. Outside the classroom, you will participate in internships and service projects that reinforce your studies. You will learn from people in churches, nursing homes, social service agencies and nonprofit organizations. And finally, you will conduct research and write a thesis, guided and directed by your professors and mentors.

The Religion program invites you to join us for local and international events of study and spirituality through the Office of Christian Ministry, including mission trips and the Civil Rights Spring Break Pilgrimage. You will also be able to study the teachings of Martin Luther in Wittenberg in the AU in Germany Program.

Dean's Scholarship

The Dean's Scholarship was created to enhance the undergraduate academic experience for new first-time and transfer students enrolled in a major within the College of Arts & Sciences. It is a merit-based, renewable scholarship of $1,500 that can be "stacked" on top of other awarded AU academic scholarships. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in unique academic communities with a focus on career coaching and preparation.

Graduate Outcomes

When you graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion, you will have the experience necessary to continue on to graduate school, seminary or a career entwined with faith. Your expertise in the studies of spiritual texts, religious history, practical theology, ethics and world culture, coupled with four years of personal growth and exploration, will serve you well.
