History & Political Science

Explore the great questions of history and politics.

Why do world events unfold as they do? What is justice? What is the relationship between religion and politics?

These and other such questions are the concern of the History and Political Science department at Ashland University and thinking seriously about them will help you become a liberally educated person. Unlike the lecture methods used in most universities, at Ashland you will be taught through a conversational seminar style approach that is grounded in the reading of great texts and original documents. Above all, you will learn to think, read, write and speak well, so you will be prepared for graduate school or a successful career. Of special note, the graduate school offers a Master of American History and Government that is an excellent continuation for your studies in either History or Political Science.

A special advantage of studying History or Political Science at Ashland is the availability of the Ashbrook Center, an independent academic center on campus that annually brings noteworthy speakers to Ashland including presidential cabinet members, columnists, senators and successful business people.

What you will enjoy about history and political science:

  • The opportunity to know your professors well through a small class environment
  • The option to take a study-abroad trip with professors every other year
  • Our conversational seminar style presentation method
  • The unique learning opportunities the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs makes possible
  • Reading from original texts and speeches to understand and come to your own conclusions
